Olga Rypakova finishes second at the 5th stage of the Diamond League
On the night of June 2 to 3, Rome hosted the 5th stage of the elite Diamond League athletics series, where Olga Rypakova delivered a solid performance, reports the 16news.kz correspondent.
The competition in Rome was special, primarily because it marked the first meeting in a long time of all three London Olympic medalists: Olga Rypakova, Colombia’s Caterine Ibargüen, and Ukraine’s Olha Saladukha. The latter, however, was rather disappointing; she failed to produce a respectable result and consequently missed out on the final three jumps after her initial three attempts.
Rypakova and Ibargüen, on the other hand, had a very engaging duel. After the second jump, our compatriot was in the lead with a mark of 14.51m. This result spurred the Colombian star to improve her performance—reaching 14.64m in her third attempt and 14.78m in her sixth. Unfortunately, Rypakova was unable to surpass those marks and finished in second place. Third place went unexpectedly to Jamaican athlete Shanieka Thomas.
Following this stage, Olga Rypakova climbed to second place in the current Diamond League overall standings. Caterine Ibargüen holds a massive lead, having won all three stages where the women’s triple jump has been contested so far.
