The Olympic Games in Tokyo were postponed to 2021

Today, on March 24, the International Olympic Committee officially announced that the Olympic Games in Tokyo have been postponed to 2021. The agreement was reached between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and IOC President Thomas Bach.

During the conference call, the unprecedented and unpredictable spread of the coronavirus outbreak was noted, which led to a deterioration of the situation around the world. Based on this, in the current circumstances, the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan came to the conclusion that the Olympic Games in Tokyo should be postponed for the period after 2020, but no later than the summer of 2021, in order to preserve the health of athletes, as well as all those who participate in a large-scale sporting event.

“The representatives agreed that the Tokyo Olympic Games can be a beacon of hope for the world in these turbulent times. The Olympic Flame can become the light at the end of the tunnel we are currently in. Therefore, it was decided that the Olympic Flame will remain in Japan,” the message says.

The capital of Japan was supposed to host the Games from July 24 to August 9, 2020.
