110 meters hurdles
Rules
In the 110-meter hurdles, athletes take the start from a low position from the starting pads. The height of the barrier for men is 1,067 m. There are 10 barriers at the distance, the distance between which is 9.14 m. As a rule, high-class athletes overcome the distance between the barriers in three steps. It is considered optimal to pass the barriers so as not to touch them, and at the same time not to slow down.
History
The first historical sources mention the holding of short hurdle competitions in England since the middle of the XIX century. The men’s short hurdle sprint was included in the Olympic Games program in 1896.
Interesting facts
Initially, it was considered a mistake to allow the barrier to fall when overcoming an obstacle. However, it was later discovered that hitting the barrier, in itself, slows down the athlete and this rule was abolished.
